To start off i drive a 96 xj 5 speed 4.0.
Due to bad weather today my area flooded. There was a large puddle that I had to go through on my way to work. I went through it slowly but shortly after my speedo started going crazy and eventually stopped working. I pulled the plug on the speedo sensor on the t case and it was wet so I cleaned with electric parts cleaner and let it dry. It had no effect and shortly after that the check engine light came on and a couple miles down the road it stalled but fired right back up and ran fine. I'm clueless right now and have no access to a scanner until tomorrow. Any ideas? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Code p0500 vehicle speed sensor. I order one because the parts store didnt have one in stock. I still don't understand why it stalls. I unplugged the sensor and it seems that it's helped with the stalling issue but every so often it will stall.

Ah! Sounds like you're on the right track then.
The TPS really hates water. If you got a lot of splashing under the hood try disassembling the throttle body and its attachments, let everything in there dry out thoroughly. TPS is used to set the IAC and can certainly result in stalling by basically choking the engine of air

The vss came in and it was an easy install. It also came with a new connector because the stock one doesn't work with the new sensor so I had to solder it in. Speedo works again and no more stalling. Thanks
