OK TrekkerJmm asked this
he clearly states that he has no money for upgrades
then some of the wiser members recommend to stay away from welding
this will save him from possible damage that would be more expensive
then you pop off with this comment
spend money on axles and it would work
yes this is true
but if you re read the original question you will see that
he is looking fora cheep way to lock his axle
if he had the money to up grade to heaver axle shaft he would have money to install a proper locker

Hi I would like some opinions, I cant afford a locker so was thinking of welding the spider gears on my 8.25. I will be running 31's and was wondering just how strong this rear is. I did this on my Blazer with 38's and broke an axle once with it (my fault for smoking the tires while turning on pavement) I believe I have 27 spline axles...Tj

yes. there is more stress on them. but run an axle that can hold up to the size tires you are running and it will be fine.

welding spider gears isn't something you wanna do as a hobby welder.
if they are not welded properly, the welds could break and pieces of weld and metal will fly apart inside the diff, getting wedged in the ring gears, thus bringing your vehicle to a sudden halt. that's if the shafts don't take the abuse and snap letting your wheel, with shaft attached flying into oncoming traffic, or even worse, you could loose control of your heep and cause either a minor or extremely major accident.
not saying this will happen, but it is always a possibility.
get someone who has done it before and is confident of his work. one who will fill the gears with rod and weld everything together including the gears to the carrier. make sure it's as strong as possible. then smooth out the edges.
you want to weld the gears with the carrier out of the axle, so spatter doesn't get on the ring gear.
i know yours is a 8.25, but for those thinking of welding a d35 with 33 inch tires is pushing it, 35's and i'm sure something will break if driven daily.
much cheaper and easier in the long run to just get an aussie locker.
just my opinion...
