Because your front drive shaft will still be turning and your fluid coupling will be trying to put power to it and it will take it out.

Even in 2WD? The np242 is not a full time AWD case right? I believe I have a 242 and I have 2wd 4hi part time 4 hi full time and 4lo part time.

ok im no genius but im definatly not that dumb lol where did you even find that?
thanks for all the input guys and i think its pretty clear i wont be welding the diff (or the ring to the pinion) on my dd lol but that leads to my next question.... whats your opinions on the best locker for your buck?... do i go with detroit or do i go with a air locker? i am liking the idea of an air locker

The best locker is selectable. Check ARB, Zip Locker (brand new on the market) or the Eaton selectable locker. Lots of guys will say they can use Aussies and other selectable lockers, but once in a while they will complain about steering problems. It is better to be able to turn it off in the front.
