Default water pump gasket

ive never had to change a gasket on my engine before and i just got a new water pump. the directions that came with it say that i need to seal the gasket on both sides. i have some silicon sealant can i just use that or do i need to buy a specific kind?

Use a thin coat of RTV on both sides of the gasket. RTV comes in several flavors; black, red, grey, etc. shouldn't really matter which one you use for the water pump, but I like the grey stuff.

Just putting my 2 cents in but use rtv sealant made for cooling systems its grey the water will eat at the regular "blue" rtv and leak and then you will have to redo it. I know this from experience. It will say made for thermostat & waterpumps.
