I have a 1990 i6 4.0 Ho aw4 242 TC -
Just got my WP off and waiting for a new one from napa.
My question is I don't see an R for reverse flow on my old one? So as long as the Impellers go in the same direction I'll be good to go right?
Below is a pic of a new one from napa, impeller going the same direction as my old one but its standard flow.
The one I'm waiting one is so called reverse flow.
Newbie and confused help please.

Thanks just stressed ,WP and thermostat are my fist big job on my xj.
So same direction I'm good?

 

It can be confusing. The newer pumps tend not to have the R on there.

Your old wp has been in there for several years. So, you're correct when you state that as long as the impellers are directed the same way, you should be fine.

sidenote: make sure you clean ALL the old gasket remnants of the block

 

Also found out there's a bolt broke off in the iron block and new hole routed on the thermostat housing.
