My understanding at least, is that if the emissions are OE you're fine. However, any exhaust/intake modifications have to be CARB approved.

Yes, as long as it meets the emissions standards it was built for, then you are fine. Federal emissions equipment is often just fine to pass CA smog tests.

I haven't lived in California since I was 8 but that's my understanding of the emissions regulations there. Oh and if you have to replace a cat, it too had to be CARB compliant.

The only issue I can think of with oem vehicles has to do with 5.9 dodge diesels from the late 90's in California.

If the vehicle has less then 7500 miles then it needs CA emissions compliance to be registered in CA. It will need the 50 state or CA emissions compliance sticker to prove it. If it has more then 7500 miles then 49 state emissions will be fine. Make sure the emissions sticker and federal safety stickers are still in place.

And of course it has to pass smog under whichever standard it was manufactured.

i strongly suggest you pay for a pre test. if it doesnt pass then it wont be in the system... if it passes no problem BUT if it doesnt and has high readings on the PRETEST you wont be labled as a gross polluter and trust me that is a nightmare to overcome....pretest is about 15 bucks and worth it if you have never had a smog in Cali....as others have mentioned as long as ALL the 49 OEM smog stuff is on your Heep and working properly you should be good to go...again pay for the pretest...you have been warned
Cameron

p.s...get out and get that engine HOT meaning drive it on the freeway for 1/2 hour or so to get the cat HOT...makes a HUGE difference on the readings

Thanks for all the help. I've lived in Cali all my life so I'm familiar with the smog process. I just didn't know if the jeep came from the factory with the proper smog equipment out of state.

If you like your exhaust valves "DO NOT" do this.
Chevron mid grade will do the job just fine and if the HCs' and NOX are high the first two things to look at are the O2 sensor and the exhaust manifold for cracks.

hmm interesting... I was born and raised in socal up til 6 yrs ago and I remember when someone brought a vehicle in from another state it didn't have a smog pump and to put one on was cost prohibitive..

don't they still have to have a smog pump or was it that long ago?? haven't done an out of state car since mid '90's so I'm outta the loop..

If the vehicle was originally certified for either 49 or 50 state emissions without a smog pump, then none is required. I believe smog pumps are from the pre fuel injection days. None of my 5 current CA emission certified vehicles ranging in age from 1997 to 2011 has one.

I used to have a motor home with a carbureted 454 that had a smog pump.

You will need all the emission parts the jeep came with. Should be just cat conv. Stock headers and intake. No aftermarket cold air intakes..
They will smog anything in cali. Make sure you got a good gas cap. Not locking one, they never hold a seal during the vacuum check.
And by the way they got rid of the gross pollutor reference.
I deal with this every other year for my family. Specialy on my brothers lifted jacked up Passport.
Im now smog tech in nevada. Came from cali.
