VIN Confusion
Found a wrecked cherokee and was told it is a 98 which is good cause I have a 97 but, the VIN has the tenth number as a S. Now acc. to my research the number should be W and there is not any mention of what yr. or model has a S. Anybody with some knowledge?

Are you sure you are looking at the 10th place? The 8th place with an S would be a 4.0 engine. And you're right, a '98 would be a W.
When reading the English Language, we read from left to right...

THis is what I got from the CARFAX web site when I entered your number.
Sorry, but the VIN you entered is incorrect.
Please check the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) you entered, 1J4FJ68S9SL64293, for accuracy and try again below.

If this still does not work, review the VIN Accuracy Tips below.
If you want to order CARFAX Reports simply click here. No VIN needed to order.
VIN Accuracy Tips::
Copy & paste the VIN if it comes from a web site.
Type the characters in groups of four (no spaces)
The letters "I", "O" and "Q" never appear in a VIN.
The VIN must be exactly 17 characters in length.
The VIN must be from a car or light truck manufactured for the North American market since 1981.

There's one other location I've found for the VIN besides the door - on my '99 anyway. It's on a decal on the front of the radiator bottom support frame. You'll need to remove the grill and look down to the driver's side and see if you can see it.
What state are you in? Did you get a salvage title for this Heep? Don't you need a registration and plate(s)/tag(s)?

Well when I was messing around and put in 1J4FJ68S9SL64293 then added a 1 after the 3 it comes back as a 95
I put the vin you gave and check it like this
1J4FJ68S9SL64293+1
1J4FJ68S9SL64293+2
1J4FJ68S9SL64293+3
and so on to 9, it keeps coming back as a 95 jeep Cherokee.
Not sure if it helps I was just trying to see if I could figure it out.
