Unfortunately, that's the speedometer drive gear attached to the transmission output shaft. You're looking at the reason you have no speedo.
It requires removing the extension housing on the back of the transmission inorder to change that speedometer drive gear.
I would suggest taking it to a transmission shop familiar with the AW4 and have them do the work.
There was a poster on the Jeep Cherokee Forum (Cherokee Talk) some tim ago that had the same problem. As I recall, he said he couldn't find the gear anywhere. He never concluded his thread so I don't know what became of it.

Hmm. Sounds fun. I took it by a dealer today and showed him these pictures. He said he could order the drive gear but not the housing or anything. He suggested I go to a Junk Yard and see if I can find it in another one. Do you know where I can find a list of year model xj's that will have this same piece? I figure if I take one apart at a yard and get the part I will know if that is something I can install on my own myself or bring it to a shop.

You may try it yourself, if you had the tools and instructions, but if it were me, I would buy the drive gear from the dealer and take the vehicle to a tranny shop and have them replace it. That is to say, they know how to replace it.

Ok, so today I went to the junk yard and tried to pull it off of a 95. I got the drive shaft off. and Unbolted the 5 (i think 5) bolts that hold on the housing but could not get it completely seperated from the transmission because there are some bearings holding it onto the shaft. I should have taken pictures but I did not. At this point I think I will follow your advice. They have the drive gear on rockauto so I may just get it from them as it is about 15 bucks cheaper than the dealer. 44 compared to 60. After that I suppose I will go to a transmission shop. I really hate doing that knowing that it is just a single bearing that is blocking me. At least I think thats it. I'll be sure to post whatever Info I can offer when this gets resolved. Thanks for the help.

Maybe someone familiar with the AW4 2WD extension shaft will jump in here and help you out.
I only know 4X4 stuff.
Here's a link to an AW4 transmission maintenance manual
http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billav...AW4_manual.PDF
If you do take it to a transmission shop, verify that they do know how to work on the AW4 transmission. Make them show you the AW4 maintenance manual they will be using. Make them show you the torque wrenches they will be using. Don't settle for the "Universal ATF" they will try to service your tranny with. If necessary bring your own ATF.
I've ran accross lots of shops, including the dealer, that say they can work on vintage [well, they are] Cherokees. Just a few questions made them reveal their ****.

Good advice thanks. I just moved to Nashville so not sure what places are good and what arent. I'll look at some internet reviews. I saw an AAMCO not far from here so I'll check it out. Thanks again I'll let you know how it goes.

Similar problem-
98 xj 2wd with ax5 transmission. This still requires disassembling the transmission to replace the missing speexo gear inside, correct?

That looks like the speedo drive gear to me.
Doesn't look like the plastic gear in a 2WD AW4.
Maybe someone with AX5 transmission experience can chime in here.
Here's a pic of a 2WD AW4 VSS Drive gear - in chunks.

This is exactly the problem that I have, but this thread is a couple years old. Does anyone know where to get this plastic gear?
Thanks!
Thanks!
