I thought if I ran my tank dry I would suck all the **** in my tank into my filter/pump and gunk it up? I am all for throwing a gas can in the back and going until it stops, but I don't want to do any damage while experimenting. Is my float thing messed up or something, is that why it is reading funny?

Well the gauge "works" because when I fill up, it moves to full, and tracks all the way to empty, and even triggers the light when it is getting "low". If i was getting about 180 miles from about 12 gallons, that is roughly 15mpg. So if i do 14mpg*18gallons=252 miles before I should think about filling up, and that should give me a few gallons left once I fill up.
Not worth it to try to fix since I have no experience at all with anything fuel related in my xj, so as long as there is no chance I have a smaller tank, I am going to take her to 250 miles with a 5gal. can in the back lol
