I usually don't open up the vanity mirror to look at myself, but I did recently and damn do I look good. Kidding (somewhat).
The thing I noticed, however, was that the lights flash once and then die. Bulbs seem fine since they flash brightly and it is repeatable.
I don't think it's the fuse since everything else works just as it should. I'm thinking it's the wiring in the mirror itself. Does anyone have experience with this? Seems like a hard spot to work on. Thanks for any info

Mine kinda flash and sometimes go out but usually they fluctuate from dim to brighter and moving what I am guessing is the dimmer switch on the side doesn't seem to do anything. Few more things to address on the Jeep in the spring and figure when I am done and bored might mess with it. Any ideas would be appreciated here too.
The bulbs aren't seated well under the plastic. The terminals don't touch all that great.
I had issues with mine recently until I changed them to the LED kit. The bulbs are brighter and sit better in the housing. No flickering to mention.
The only issue is they are soooo bright.
I take the good with the bad

The lights flash once and then stay off. Not sure if that's the same as the flickering described.
I found this thread and saved it for a later time:

Is this the kit you're talking about? I've been meaning to upgrade to this eventually.
I see you did post in that thread.

I was sitting in my ride today waiting to go into the optometrist and looked at my visors after reading this thread. Not only do both bulbs illuminate in both visors when you flip up the little door, but the dimmer slide switch works beautifully.

Does the light stay on no matter what position the dimmer slide is in? Just varies the brightness? All the way up or all the way down is not an off position? I ask because now after this post I have to fix it. And I do not even use them. Damn this post. LOL
Thank You. Doesn't work right so I had no idea what right was. Now I know when I try and fix it. Guessing poor connections.

I put in the LED Kit and while that helped slightly, it still flashes and turns off if I open the mirror all the way. I can get the light to stay on if I only open it half way or so. Definitely a bad connection inside the mechanism. Can't see an easy way to get at it though.

My driver's side does the same thing, mine seems to be either a bad switch (inside the visor), or a bad connector right where it goes into the headliner.

There are at least two types of visors for the XJ. There is a single wire and a two wire version. I know this because I have a set of each. They physically look the same except for the wire connections. I have a 2001 XJ with the 2 wire connection and have a spare set with the single wire. I'm going to assume that the two wire version is the latest, but I don't know when that changed.
If you have the single wire visor the ground path for the lights are through the rod and mounting bracket to the sheet metal mount. Obviously this path needs to making good electrical contact. The two wire visor has both positive and ground wires, so an electrical connection through the mounting bracket isn't necessary.
I would guess that the single wire visor had issues with grounding, so the two wire visor was developed to replaced it.
