Default Valve Cover

With my next oil change coming up I was planning on removing the valve cover, cleaning it out, sand blasting and then painting it.

I was planning on then using a fel pro permadry gasket and was wondering what all that entails or if a cork gasket would be better.

Also any tips or things i should look out for would be great.

Thanks in advance

Be very careful about taping it off when sandblasting it, because if you get sand inside the baffles inside the cover you will never get it back out, and then it will end up in your oil when you reinstall it.

I've heard of good success with just using RTV also. Apply a bead and let it "skin" over before assembly. I'd use a torque wrench set at 28 in-lbs.

I prefer the Felpro, if you torx correctly it should not leak!

Hate cleaning off the rtv

When you sand blast the valve cover, I'd tape it off really good. Like fonman25 says, "you don't want to get sand in the baffles." I personally used the Felpro gasket with a little RVT to just hold it in place. It never leaked again. Just my rear main seal leaks now. AAAUUUGGHH!

I've heard that Jeep doesn't recommend a gasket with the original valve cover because it is ineffective. Only hearsay, no firsthand experience.

what you could do to sand blast it is to use your old gasket and bolt the valve cover to a board that way you dont get sand inside the valve cover.

I use felt pro gaskets and love the,=m. Never had an issue. I use RTV(grey chrysler recommended) and mount the gasket to the valve cover, let it set up(about an hour) then instal it. Torque it down. after about 100 miles i will torque it down again just to make sure its on there.

I did this at night that way the rtv would have time to set up and cure.

If you decide to use a gasket, the Haynes manual gives the bolt torque as 55 in-lbs. I was taught that when a gasket is installed with a thin coat of RTV, the parts should be assembled immediately. If I recall correctly, RTV is easily removed with carb cleaner and a coarse shop rag. The yellow adhesive some use on valve cover gaskets is a bear to remove.

Use a felpro gasket with the rubber washers that come in the box,rtv is a last ditch effort for things that leak and you cant afford to replace. Also called the lazy mans gasket (rtv).

RTV is used for some applications as original equipment by many engine manufacturers.

davida your engine bay is amazingly clean, i hate you for that

moving on, so when you guys say you used a felpro gasket was that the permadry one that is $43 or the cork one for $7?

just wondering because from what i read you need to use some sort of sealant and other things that seem like a hassle for the cork one and the permadry one needs nothing, you basically just put it on.

Or did i read wrong?
