Yes it's necessary for proper operation of the HVAC system and cruise control if you have it.

I drilled a few holes and bolted it to the back of my bumper, you may even be able to reinstall somewhere inside the eng compartment.

I'm sure people can figure out what i was talking about. It may not be a proper automotive term but it applies.

Cars do have a heating, ventilation and air conditioning system.

Maybe i mis-spelled something you can correct now...

I relocated mine to there. You will probably have to get some tubing though, mine was very brittle and broke when we moved it.

that depends on your year, mine has the washer fluid bottle right there.

and i would consider whats on your vehicle an HVAC system.

and personally i dont think that ball is important, when i put my new bumpers on, i took it off, and just put a plug cap on the end of the hose running to it, my CC and heat still work just fine, my A/C doesnt work but it hasnt since i got the vehicle, we filled it up once and it all leaked back out so i said screw it, my A/C is called 55 with the windows down!

I'm pretty sure Howler_GT mounted his behind the metal crossmember thing that is behind the bumper using a small peice of stainless steel or aluminum and it made for a nice clean install that wasn't too far from the original location. There's some pics in this thread...
