Default vac-disco front diff housing

If I have all the bits from a later non-disconnect axle, I just block-off the vacuum-actuator with a plate... right???

if I'm remembering right you need to move the seal on the disco side in to the pumpkin

Plug up your vacuum lines that you took off the axle disco switch and ziptie them up out of the way. You don't need a vacuum leak to have to deal with.

Would the disco front end have the machined step for the seal to fit in?

Too new for vacuum... it's a 1991 and my housing is bent a little.

I can find vac-disco front ends at Pull-a-Part if I can reuse my old guts.

I can't find the write up now but if you search Naxja, there's a seal that you have to put in inboard of the disconnect. Once you've put that seal in (which fits with no modification to the housing IIRC) all you have to do is swap in the one piece shaft.

I have read that its a crap shoot on weather it has it or not you gotta pull the diff to find out
you can keep the seal out at the disco if you sand a nice clean surface on the axle at that point

Cool... I'll try to find one with the machined-land for the inboard seal.

Just for the hell of it I pulled the shift motor off of the 87 to check for the machined seal seat. The bearing is flush with the axle tube and has no way to install the seal on the inboard side.

I'm pretty sure that there's a place to put a seal in the center section of the diff. In pretty much the same place as a non disco housing would have a seal for the pass side axle.

The seal was to the outboard side of the disco housing and the bearing on the inboard side.

no, you DON'T have to move it to the pumpkin.

that bearing is unnecessary.

you remove that bearing, and that inner shaft (it's got a c-clip inside the diff at the pass. side gear/spider gear and just slides out).

then you get the proper seal, and pop it in where that bearing is.

and *presto* you can slide the new shaft in there.

you guys seem to forget a non-disco axle couldn't possibly have that bearing there, and so it will need to be removed from the disco axle in order for the non-disco shaft to install properly.

also, without lube to that bearing from the diff (which would be prevented if you put the seal @ the inside of the diff), it would seize up.

that makes sense. This is a case of a little knowledge being a dangerous thing. I haven't had to deal with it as I've only had a '91 and a '92. I was just going off of what I could remember from what I read quite a while ago. Never a good idea. Anywho, thanks for clearing that up

yes you need to remove the bearing but if you dont move the seal to the pumpkin there is no place for the seal to seat to in place of the bearing
thats why you need to move to the pumpkin if it has the machining there

solderjunkie you get what we are saying right
