Plug up your vacuum lines that you took off the axle disco switch and ziptie them up out of the way. You don't need a vacuum leak to have to deal with.

I can find vac-disco front ends at Pull-a-Part if I can reuse my old guts.

I can't find the write up now but if you search Naxja, there's a seal that you have to put in inboard of the disconnect. Once you've put that seal in (which fits with no modification to the housing IIRC) all you have to do is swap in the one piece shaft.

you can keep the seal out at the disco if you sand a nice clean surface on the axle at that point

Just for the hell of it I pulled the shift motor off of the 87 to check for the machined seal seat. The bearing is flush with the axle tube and has no way to install the seal on the inboard side.

The seal was to the outboard side of the disco housing and the bearing on the inboard side.

no, you DON'T have to move it to the pumpkin.
that bearing is unnecessary.
you remove that bearing, and that inner shaft (it's got a c-clip inside the diff at the pass. side gear/spider gear and just slides out).
then you get the proper seal, and pop it in where that bearing is.
and *presto* you can slide the new shaft in there.
you guys seem to forget a non-disco axle couldn't possibly have that bearing there, and so it will need to be removed from the disco axle in order for the non-disco shaft to install properly.
also, without lube to that bearing from the diff (which would be prevented if you put the seal @ the inside of the diff), it would seize up.
that bearing is unnecessary.

that makes sense. This is a case of a little knowledge being a dangerous thing. I haven't had to deal with it as I've only had a '91 and a '92. I was just going off of what I could remember from what I read quite a while ago. Never a good idea. Anywho, thanks for clearing that up

thats why you need to move to the pumpkin if it has the machining there
