finney's suggestion gives me an idea- find someone locally with a hydraulic press you can use. Where are you located?

Sometimes heating with just a propane torch will make enough differance to get it knocked out, Don't get crazy with the heat--and keep an exting. handy!!

I've been heating and pounding on it with a sledge and socket for some time now with no improvement

i say keep the heat on it for 5 minutes straight and then try to beat it out with a HFH

yeah I guess socal is a bit far to come lend a hand...

I dunno man, unless you can get to a press it may be done for. Maybe soak the whole yoke end in a cup full of PB blaster overnight, then try to beat it out with no heat in the morning..

I've been heating the area that's highlighted as well as the opposite side.. is this the right spot to heat?

yeah you seem to have the right idea. Did you try a slightly smaller socket to make sure it is not what is holding you up?

looks like you have had a few hits on the yoke/ It happens to most all of us. I think your best bet is gonna be a press with some carefull grinding prior to pressing

the only other thing I can think of is to cut the joint in two places with a hacksaw or sawzall with metal blade. This would allow the center of the joint to be removed so you could work on the caps one at a time, may be easier. you seem to be dead set on saving this shaft, so I am trying to get you through this.

Thanks guys for all your help thus far. I really appreciate it. I've been sawing away for the last 30 minutes or so with a hacksaw and it seems to be going alright, if I can get the joint out I think the caps will just pop out. It's just going to take some time, I'll update you guys with my progress. Thanks again!
