what are the other symptoms. dont know why you were changing the timing, reset it at 10* and try again. bad timing will not shut off a car, unless it is +/-10 or so degrees

my car shut off while driving. then i towed it home and there was no spark. So i replaced the cps the distributor, the distributor cap and rotor, and the coil, and the spark plugs. I lined up the timing and it fired and just pooped. i wnet back and fourth with it and Nothing. sometimes it would fire and just stop firing and go back to cranking.

Just remembered that when i was driving i heard a loud pop thump sound and i tried stepping on the gas and nothing and then i just shut it off. so i think my timing chain took a dump!!!!!!!! because when i get it timed sometimes i get it to fire and then just goes back to cranking.

If you really think that is the problem you could pull the cover off and see if there are any marks on the cover or how loose it is. It is a lot of work for a "guess" though, then again it could rule it out. I actually spent 3 weeks trying to diagnose one of my cars before and after 5 trips to the junk yard and over $300 in parts I found out the Camshaft was broken.
