Unknown noise
Hey Guys,
M 87 waggy with the 4.0 is making a strange noise. When I turn off the motor it makes a ticking sound for maybe 15-20 seconds then all of a sudden there is a "clunk" then its silent for a few seconds then the process begins again until the engine is cooled down. I crawled under it only to find out the "clunking" is from the exhaust shifting. For some reason the previous owner did not connect the metal EGR line from the exhaust manifold to the intake manifold not sure if that makes a difference. It does not have a cat installed, is there something causing pressure to build up then release making the exhaust to shift like that? Thanks for any help!

With the EGR pipe disconnected you should have exhaust coming out from it and make noise, unless it has been closed. The ticking is the metal of the exhaust cooling down. Check that the washers of the bolts of the exhaust manifold are conical, those are not washers but cup springs to allow heat expansion.

Thanks for the reply! the exhaust manifold is capped however, on the intake manifold where the metal EGR line screws into is not. Good point on the ticking. It just seems odd to have the "ticking" followed by the "clunk" and then silence until the process repeats itself. Would the exhaust move like that if the washers were loose or out of shape? I always thought if the manifolds were loose it would have a idle issue but mine seems to have a smooth idle.
