Default Turn signal problems, please help?

I'm new to the forum but I have a 2000 xj sport. I've had it for a few months but recently both turn signals (left and right) will not work but hazards work perfectly, occasionally after wiggling the turn singalong switch the signal will blink once or twice but shuts off. I've tried searching for similar problems but have had no luck. Any suggestions?

Had a similar problem a month back, and appears to be a common XJ issue. One of two things:

Flasher Relay: This is located below the headlight switch, under the dash. Accessed by removing the trim panel below the steering column, (3 screws), and the metal plate behind the trim panel (2 screws). If you turn your hazards on, you'll be able to locate the flasher relay by the clicking sound it will be making as your blinkers flash, it should be the relay wrapped in foam. Typically a $15 dollar relay at most Auto Part stores.

Multifunction Switch: (Blinker Switch). Could be the switch itself as your Hazards work, but your blinkers typically don't without some coercing. I've seen posts about some of the XJ Blinker Switches being interchangeable with the ones from some of the Neons, but I'm not sure what years this applies to. I priced one for my XJ from the Dealership last week, and they were quoting around $84.00 I believe.

Try the flasher relay first, as its both cheaper, a commonly known issue, and much easier to replace yourself than the switch is.

Mine failed too., Bought the switch from Rockauto for around $46.00. Still doesn't work. I'm going to buy the relay now (duh!). This should fix it.

I kinda fixed mine a few weeks ago finally haha, it was the relay. But now, occasionally when I put on my left turn signal, and only my left, my hazards flash. Anyone with this problem or now how to fix it? It sounds like a ground to me but no clue where.

I'm having this exact issue. It started last week, the signal would blink once and then nothing. Hazards work just fine. I have a '96, so it's a single relay for both functions. Swapped in a column switch from the salvage yard, same result. Swapped out the relay and the problem remains. I even popped the cover off my original relay and inspected it... Clean as can be and it flashes the hazards without issue. Fuses are all fine, so with the intermittent nature of the problem, I'm looking for an issue with the supply voltage running to the signal side of the flasher relay, but I need to retrieve my testers from the office and find some more time before I'll know more.

And yes, I'll also be chasing down every chassis ground I can get my hands on as well.

Side note... situations like this are exactly how you justify keeping multiple vehicles around!

my problem was the fuse. I could wiggle it and my blinkers would work. After replacing it, they all work now. Make sure the fuse is getting good contact on the panel. Give it a wiggle and push it in with the blinkers on. See if you get any reaction.

I'm giving you advise from my problem which sounds just like what was happening in previous posts. Doesn't mean you don't have a different issue.
