Default Trying to rethread shifter shaft - oops

Hey all - I think this is the right subforum but please move if not.

Unfortunately the PO's weapons-grade-ugly AX15 shifter **** was on so tight that when I tried to unscrew it, it took the threaded portion of the shifter shaft with it.

So upon the fine advice of this forum, I bought an M10x1.5 die to rethread the shaft as well as an M10x1.5 extension to put the **** in a comfortable place.

HOWEVER

I quickly discovered that while the die was the correct size for the threads, the rod itself was far thicker.

Is there any way for me to reduce the diameter of this rod so I can thread it? Or would I be best to take it to a machine shop?

Many thanks, all!

Have someone weld on that extension you got and call it a day. You will not be able to rethread it
