Default trying to resolve 4x4 issue

I'm getting alot of noise w/ 4h or 4lo. I just popped the differential cover on the front axle and everything looks good. No metal shavings/pieces that I could see. However, I've got oil leaking from the front passenger side. Could a bad axle shaft or u joint cause unusual noise or vibration w/ 4wd engaged and not in 2h? Also I replaced the 3 front drive shaft u joints already.

the u joints on the axle shafts both looked pretty bad. I get the feeling like the 4wd is engaged when cornering in 2h, like it's binding up or something(not that intense of course). Is that a symptom and would it be more apparent w/ 4wd engaged?

hey, it's winter and I need my 4wd. Doesn't anyone have some advice? Should I junk the front end or would bad axle shaft/ujoints cause problems in 4wd more than in 2h? There's a little noise from 35-40mph (differential whistle?) in 2h coming from somewhere up front. No light comes on telling me I'm in 4w, but it definately is. Also it won't disengage. Probably not the problem since so many people are dealing with it and don't mention 4wd performance issues. w/ 4 engaged it feels somewhat unstable like it's going to go where ever it wants, not the usual comfort when you use 4wd in the snow. By the way it's my 3rd jeep so I am familier with how they should feel. Snows comin!

yes if they are bad. I would also check the wheel bearings and ball joints.
