Trussed D30, or cut down Full-width D44
Narrowed Ford HP D44 here.
FWIW,
I've run a few trails with a local guy that is running 37's on a TJ with a stock LP D30. He's never broken a shaft or bent his housing. It all depends on your driving style.

This thread is more of a dream that I'd like to see come to pass than reality in the future as of right now. If I'm ever going to go through with it there will be much planning and research done.
I'd rather not go D60, the loss of clearance isn't worth it to me. I know I've seen people shave them down to reduce that but I'd like to keep it D44 in the rear.
To supply power to all of this(I feel that this is a very relevant part of what I'd plan to do) I'm looking at a Cummins QSB3.3, which makes 115hp and 300ft-lbs of Tq stock at 1400rpm. With tuning and some work I can see 350+ft-lbs of torque being a very reachable number. With all that power at 1400 rpm going deep into gears wouldn't be as much of a requirement. From my understanding in a D44, when you put big tires on them and run Chromoly Shafts the weak point becomes the ring and pinion. the shallower the gears, the stronger the ring and pinion are.
Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on any point here. I'm also not trying to be a competition rig, this would be purely for pleasure/recreation.

Based on what you're saying here, I will stand by my previous statement that you can run 37's on a very well built XJ D44 and be just fine. As Frank pointed out, it's all about your driving style and the type of terrain you're wheeling. So yeah, find an XJ D44, truss it, gear it, lock it, chromoly it, disk brake it, and go have fun.

No I didn't quit over one post it happened all the time. They would reword my post if they didn't like how I said something or just delete parts of it. It wasn't like I was cussing or anything just disagreed with some moderators and hurt some feelings.
I agree 100% that technique is more important than the rig itself.
Mmmm... diesel torque in an XJ brings the kewl.

I figure if I'm gonna build this XJ, I might as well drop the coin to build it right the first time and have all the parts up to spec for where I want to end up with it.
