Good way I found to see if I was still in 4wd was to just power brake it. Keep your foot on the brake and hit the gas, if your in 2wd you will spin the back tires, but if your still in 4wd you will move forward because your brakes cant keep the power of 4wd from moving the vehicle. But it doesnt sound like you are stuck in 4wd, because if your were then turning on pavement is nearly impossible and it makes really nasty metal clanking noises. I could barely pull in and out of a parking spot. I got my transfer case to go into 4wd full time and I could turn and drive fine so I drove about 10 miles from where I left my jeep overnight to my house. Once I got home in my parking lot I was doing about 25 mph and I put the tranny in nuetral and as I coasted I shifted the transfer case into 2HI then the shifted the tranny back into drive. It back in no problem and I didnt hear any noises my 4 full time light went off and I could turn and I havent had any problems since. But I havent tried putting it back into 4wd since just to be safe.

Instead of jacking up the back and seeing if you drive off jack stands and possibly screwing something up, why don’t you just disconnect the rear drive shaft? If you’re stuck in 4wd the front drive shaft will pull you, if you are not stuck in 4wd you won’t go anywhere. Much safer.
Sounds like axle u-joints to me, though.
