Trimming fenders?

I've decided to get some Rusty's cut-out flares and cut about 2" of metal back off the fenders. I've removed the stock ones already, but I'm puzzled at what to do about the plastic inserts in the front wheel wells. If I just take them out all kinds of mud and crap will end up in there by the doors. What are you guys doing. Are you relocating the insert some how? If anyone has the answer some pictures of what you did would be great.

I tore mine completely out. It does leave that gap down there by the doors though I have not yet done anything about it. I might use the old plastic and cut something to fit there just enough to plug up those holes.

Not exactly sure yet though.

You have a couple of options, I went and got a 6ft ft length of closed cell pipe insulation... I believe it was the largest they had... I cut it in half and squeezed them in on both sides...fills the gaps nice and tight your other option is using pool noodles... both are water proof and both work fine...

Are you just shoving that pipe insulation in the void? Does it stay in?

It's a nice tight fit, after I squeezed them in I undercoated and haven't thought about them since... work great...

I went to Lowes and then Home Depot and couldn't find any bigger than 1-1/8". I'll have to look at Granger.

that's cool... that's your choice... I thought about not putting anything there until I took it out on the trails and all the mud that got stuck on the door hinges made me change my mind... whenever I opened the door I could hear the dirt grinding in them... that doesn't happen anymore now that I got the insulation up there...

I plan on using base molding as the fender flare with sheet metal backing to hold its form (use rivets).. but then I was thinking that I might as well extend the sheet metal all the way inside the fender well, secured by using self tapping sheet metal screws.

This will keep the mud out and have a nice clean look. (spray with undercoating) and would reduce the chance of slicing up the tire with exposed sharp metal edges.

The "noodle" is a great idea for helping the sheet metal body keep its form near the door (where others stuff it to keep the mud out.) SEE PICTURE - JUST BEHIND AND BELOW WHERE THE CHEROKEE EMBLEM USED TO BE..

Make sure you update your post with pics of your progress!

Here are pictures after cutting the fenders out. How big of a tire do you think will fit with the 3" lift?
