No matter what I do, I cannot get the rustolium chrome paint to not orange peel.
so Its either the wrong paint and or the wrong person (me) . i think its both.
Im about to just do the silver.
Im guessing my rims are alloy. its, 98 cherokee.
it has 350k miles so last year I spent the summer polishing the rims. but there just so banged up, thats why i ended up getting the 2n 1 primer which is awesome. I also tried other primer but this
GOD DAMN RUSTOLIUM CRAP CHROME will NOT Stick.
Dumb question, but did you rough up the surface with some 180 grit sand paper first? what temp is it when you're painting and how thick of a layer are you applying? are you doing this with spay paint?
I haven't used rustolium, but I have done rattle can paint jobs before. Lots of thin layers with A LOT of dry time in between them. I build a paint booth in my garage. and use a two stage clear coat.
I painted the hood and bumper with spray paint on my mazdaspeed protege:
I did no polishing/buffing after the last coat of clear, just left it as it.
a pic from the process:
Some paints can not go over some primers. I don't know about your combination.
I used incompatible paint and primer on my gauge pod so that it would develop a texture to match the dash texture. Then shot some satin clear over it to set the mess. It came out perfect.
I used rustolium bright coat chrome spray can for 5 bucks at lowes. also for primer I used 2n1 automotive primer which is sandable. also tried a rustolium metal finish primer spray can as well.
Im not trying to do a professional trype paint job on my rims here. I just wanted them to look nicer since I couldn't get them the way I wanted just by polishing. The rustolium silver paint worked perfectly. but I rather the chrome look. so I completely stripped off all the silver, sanded it, primed it but this damn chrome refuses to stick. I did multiple light coats, the temperature wad 73 degrees, I was in the shade. so I was successful at painting the rims silver with the same rustolium brand. but I cant figure out what Im doing so wrong. they just look horrible, but shiny lol.
your car is beautiful!
Im also trying to paint areas of my jeep like bottom of the doors. my jeep is a beautiful forest green. its limited and I think this color is strictly to this model. im trying hard to keep this color but my hood is bad so im painting that black ..long story lol
i just want to paint my rims chrome and have it stick. im a simlle girl lol
why does everything need to be complicated 😕
Only thing I can add is re-read the chrome paint can to see if they say use a certain primer. Seems like if it was that sensitive it would say which one to use. The crinkle effect you are talking about sure sounds like incompatible paints. Like lacquer over urethane or some such.
If everything is right you can get really great results from a can. Like Circle's car or the filing cabinet I restored. That thing looks like a black car. Took more than a week. I don't remember all the details now, but it was the first enamel I've done so I was crazy careful about the instructions.
I do have a small airbrush i use for my airplane models. any suggestions on what I can make work with an airbrush?
I just watched a dude on YouTube use the same paint chrome I used on his bumper with primer and it was fine.
Thanks for your help. I may try an automotive or a different brand like kylon.

I highly recommend https://touchupdirect.com/ to get a color match paint to repaint body panels the factory color. I did not use their clear, I used this stuff:
Soooooo..... After you put a layer of the chrome on, have you wet sanded it with like 2000 grit and 4000 grit? If it gets super smooth, and obviously not super chrome after the sanding, will the next layer go on smooth if it has a smooth surface to adhere to?
I know you said you already "polishing, priming , remove, priming , painting, priming, washing, polishing, priming , sanding, washing, priming, sanding sanding itifpfiydlycrojb......" but did you paint, wet sand with super high grit paper, then try a top coat on top after the surface is nice and smooth? obviously wet sanding, then cleaning before the hopefully final top coat..
What are you using to clean with? Isopropyl works really good without potentially damaging anything like acetone could possibly do.
The Rustoleum Silver wheel paint works great. Just scuff with a scotch brite pad, mask them off and go to town. I don't even prime them. I do spray a couple coats of clear. It holds up pretty well even through the snowy winters.
