Default transmission slipping???

Driving on the highway my transmission jumps up to around 2800-3000 rpms...so I thought I lost my overdrive gear. Hen when I came to a stop it seems to be revving then slowly taking off from a stop. I've had no issues before this..don't see any leaks. Maybe a faint smell of tranny fluid in the engine bay.

Time for a rebuild or new tranny???

I actually just happened to have checked it the day before. I drove for about 45mins-1hr, pulled into my driveway which is level, kept the motor running, and then pulled and checked the tranny dip stick. The level looked fine, ONLY thing I would say that is that the color of the fluid was a light brown (similar to oil looking), instead of the typical light red color.

Also just to update...I parked the Jeep for about 6 hours, when I drove it again, the transmission shifted just fine again. It was as if nothing happened. Shifted into overdrive and everything.

Going to do a the drain and fill on the tranny with Dex/Merc III a few times and go from there. Last time I did that was about 500 miles ago.

Pretty suprised you atf is dark after 500 miles. Are you towing a trailer?
The tranny still has lines to the radiator? The radiator is in good condition?
Your plan sounds good re replacing the atf but something is causing your atf to go bad.

Oops...didn't mean that I replaced all of the ATF fluid 500 miles ago, I did a drain and fill (3 qts of Dex/Merc III).
