Default Transmission slamming into gear at speed

I have a 97 Jeep Cherokee Country 4.0l inline V6, When i bought it i didnt have a problem with the transmission but just recently I have had a problem with the transmission slamming into 3rd and 4th gear while at highway speeds(55mph) Today i had to pull over to the side of the road and when i stopped the engine stalled out. After starting it up once it stalled out about 30 seconds later. I started it up again reving the engine a bit then got back onto the road. After driving about 6-7 miles the problem came back. Can anyone tell me whats going on?

First if you have a 4.0 it is NOT a v6 it is a straight 6. Have you check the fluid level? Also what does the fluid look like is it bright red or is it a burnt brown color?

I'd put lunch on your TPS malfunctioning. Can't hurt to check adjustment of the TV cable (runs from throttle to trans) either.
