Good morning all, I have a 2000 XJ sport. This thing is new to me, about a month. I drive it once a week to work 85 miles one way and it runs great. When I drive without the cruise control the transmission acts perfect, gears down when I climb a hill. If I set the cruise control when I climb a hill the transmission doesn't kick down, cruise stay on as I slow down, then speed resumes as the road flattens out. Question is, this normal or is something wrong?
I have similar problem on my 2024 Grand Cherokee. About once a month, transmission stays in D1 after a turn. I found stopping, going to Neutral, then back to Drive will clear the problem. Impossible to duplicate when I want to...may be stuck with this ghost for awhile...cant fix what wont break on cue!

The cruise control should "pull" on the throttle cable as it tries to maintain speed. That should move the kickdown cable and drop you into lower gear, increasing rpm. It seems to work when you manually move the throttle...so it seems your cruise control does not adjust the throttle. Keep your foot Lightly on the pedal when going uphill on CC and see if it pulls the pedal down on its own. The CC is vacuum controlled, might have a broken line or rubber tube to the motor

Probably won't hurt to check the kickdown/throttle cable adjustment.
Here's a video. There's millions of them

Thanks much for the input, this gives me a starting point. I will check for vacuum leaks and adjust the kickdown cable and see if that changes anything.

Good morning everyone, checked and adjusted the kickdown cable at the throttle body. This fixed my issue with cruise control, transmission kicks down as it should. Thanks for the input!!
