I have a 1992 Jeep Cherokee and it is 2 wheel. It is also a 5 speed and I am going to rebuild my transmission. I want to turn into a 4x4. I know it is a lot work, but I enjoy doing the work. I know I have to get a different front axel. I have an AX15 transmission. I saw specs on another jeep which was a 4x4 and the specs read it had an AX15 manual transmission with a 2 (something) transfer case. So, can I keep my current AX15 transmission and add a transfer case? Or, do I need another type of transmission? Thank you in-advance for any information.
You will get more informative responses but the bottom line is yes you can use the AX-15, and yes you will need a transfer case usually either NP231 (for part time 4wd) or NP242 (for part time/full time). Front axle, front and probably rear drive shafts, xfer case linkage/shifter.
