sounds like your tc linkage is out of adjustment. losen the set screw
on the shift rod to the tc and manually move the lever all the way back to 2wd at the tc . then make sure the shifter for the 4wd is in 2wd . tighten
the set screw and you should be good.

Oh well. Guess I'll tear mine apart tomorrow. I was driving today in 2H and it acted like it went out of gear into neutral. Wouldnt engage in park or reverse. I tried 4-Hi, same thing. But 4-Low will go into drive and reverse no problems. I have to play around with it to shift it back to 2H from 4-Low, but nothing happens. The occasional grind when I put it in drive. And a grind when I put it in park. As of now, 4Low engages and oddly, Neutral (on the Tcase selector between 4H and 4L engages). Im not sure what to think about that. The T case has fluid in it. When I put it in Drive while in 2H, 4H, and 4L, the rear driveshaft doesnt spin as if the rear differential is shot.
Im stumped

if the rear axle was shot the ds would spin while sitting still did you make sure the linkage to tc case did not slip

the linkage is in all the way. ive even crawled underneath to make sure by hand that its fully in. after reading through the haynes repair manual all signs point to a bad transfer case. the book basically ends up saying that if the t-case makes 'noises' (not sure what all that meant) in both 2H and 4H but not 4Low...or makes noises while in 4Low but not 2H or 4H, then there is damage inside the t-case. thats pretty much the exact symptom Im getting. Only I dont want to go pay $1000 for a new Tcase and I dont care to try and rebuild one myself. Is there a cheaper way to getting a tcase replaced? Im nowhere near a salvage yard and I dont know where to look online for used parts or a cheap wholesale site
