Default transmission interchange ?

i have a 1995 jeep cherokee 2 door 4.0 4x4 auto matic
i just started to have trouble with the fromnt of the transmission seal leaking pretty heavy when i full throttle it and than come to a slow stop it leaks so bad the trans fluid poors out onto the cross over exaust pipe and smokes to death pretty bad ..so my question is, can i go and get another front seal for the trans mission and swap it out myself or no. if yes whats the part number i need. 2nd question is a friend has a 4.0 4x4 automatic transmission he is selling cheap out of a 1990 limited are the transmissions the same ? can i use this or dont even waste my time. thanks. and dose anyone know the year interchanges for these jeeps. thanks

IIRC the '90 is a 21 spline and the speedometer is mechanical instead of electronic. Might also use different TCU's as the '90 has different TPS and other sensors.

What's probably leaking are the seals and/or bushings in the front pump. You have to pull the torque converter, then the front pump, check the converter mating surface for wear. If it's developed grooves it'll rip up any new seal you install in short order.

If they're both 4WD, the speedo sensor is pretty much immaterial.

The 1990 should be 21-sp, the 1995 should be 23-sp. However, the input gear can be swapped on the transfer cases - I believe the helix angle changed around 1993 or so on the input gearset, but you can source a replacement for your year (that will mesh properly) from an outfit like Novak Adapters.

Apart from that, you should be able to swap slushboxen without significant difficulty. The bellhousing pattern and transfer case patterns are the same, as is the case length. The electrical connector should be the same, but I wouldn't swear to it.

The replacement input gear should be available for a nominal fee - check Novak. If you end up swapping it out, I'd like to talk to you about the old input gear/gearset.
