Default Please Help! Transmission Fluid Leak 2WD XJ

Please! Any Help?

1993 Cherokee Country 2WD

Fluid is leaking from Output shaft (where the tranny mates with the drive shaft).
I already changed the seal for the output shaft, and am wondering if there might be an inner seal that needs attention.

Any insight?

Thanks in advance.

Had the same problem on our 1996 2WD Sport, I obtained a replacement oil seal for the output extension - NAPA part NOS 14730, $7.69.

Removed the Propshaft by undoing the 4 spider joint bolts (8mm) after marking the prop to coupling position with some paint.
Had to remove the round metal dust sheild by levering it off.
Removed the old seal using a screwdriver (careful not to scratch the housing bore) and carefully drifted the new seal in using a large socket making sure it stayed level all the way until its face was level with the edge of the housing. remeber to put some grease on the end of the propshaft and gently refit it to gearbox to avoid damaging seal lips.
Refit spider and clamps - tightening to 14lb ft evenly.

Seems to have fixed the leak for now - was loosing about 1 qt a month of ATF!

Seems

As an Engineer I think that the replacement seal is a bit minimal and wont withstand much from this type of aplication

I think that this seal would make a better replacement

Default Thanx, Ian!

Just to be clear... you reccomend the NAPA part? The seal I used to replace was from Advance. I believe I seated it properly, but I am new to wrnnching in general and tend to fly by the seat of my pants...

The NAPA part is made by SKF, they are a major OEM in Europe, I noticed that the failed part I removed was made by National 38X58X8, it looked like it wasnt origional part either.
So far NAPA part isnt leaking but if it does I will get another from Mopar to see if its better design, transmission has done 230,000 miles and propshaft splines are a little worn allowing a bit of freeplay that may damage seal.

Forgot to mention - check condition of propshaft nose that fits into gearbox - if the surface is scratched or damaged it will damage the seal lip when its rotating and going in an out.
Also make sure you fitted the seal with the writing on the outside face "NATIONAL 38X58X8".

Thanks Ian, I'll take a look this weekend. Do I need to install the NAPA (or MOPAR) part with the writing on the outside as well?

Yes the flat metal facing faces outward (manufacturese identification is stamped on this face), the seal lips face at 45 degree angle inwards to the gearbox - so positive pressure causes them to seal better, the metal spring bit is inside the transmission.

Thanks Ian. Hope I did it backwards last time - that will make this fix pretty easy!

I am having the same issue right now, leaking Trans fluid from the output shaft seal. I purchased my replacement from O'Reillys, part no 710319 made by National. It seemed to fit well, and the shaft appears to be in very nice condition, very smooth, no scratches. It seems like a perfect install, but after driving it I am still loosing fluid. I can see fluid around the seal and its collecting on the dust cap and dripping off. I have no idea what to do at this point. I don't want to keep buying seals or replacing fluid. I'm open to suggestions. Thanks.

Thanks guys. I gotta believe that someone on this group has the solution here - Let's hear it so we can all stop spraying ATF all over the road!

Thanks in advance...

I think this is the answer we are looking for :-
http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f11/t...oblems-682183/

When I fitted the seal I noticed that the propshaft yoke had a fair bit of freeplay in the gearbox, that would explain even the new seal leaking.

I will find out how much it costs to have the old bush driven out and the new one fitted at the local machine shop.
