I have a 97 xj sport. 4.0 auto. I was recently going to drain and fill the transmission on my xj only to discover the drain plug is stripped. If i can get the bolt out can i rethread or tap out the pan or do i need to just replace it? If i can tap it out is there any specific size or thread?

At the Napa I know we sell oversize oil pan drain plugs for when something like this happens. No idea how well they work or if tranny ones can be bought though.

It was designed that way. The plug strips instead of the pan. Go to Napa and get a replacement plug with washer.

Get a flat blade screwdriver under the flange of the plug and remove it with the socket.Originally Posted by dr.zoidberg
