Default Transmission - 4-spd Manual to 5-Spd

What (compatable/bolt-on) transmission and other parts would I need to switch out my current 4-speed manual to a 5-speed manual? I have an '87 with the 2.5 L 150 CID L4 AMC engine with only about 15K miles, while the transmission has around 188K miles.

you have an ax4 trans.

the ax4 is the same trans as an ax5...except for 5th gear. BUT 5th is just a slide rail and 5th gear away..

that said, you have to gut the trans to put it in.

anyways, you're looking for an '84-86 2.8l 5 speed, or 84-01 2.5l 5 speed.

I would swap to external slave cylinder as well, if you don't already have it. the trans are direct swap.

I just did this swap. No difference in the trans. everything bolts up the same. Be advised that if you have the 4sd you more then likely have 3.55 gears, or possibly 4.10's. If you have 3.55's 5th gear is just about useless if you add 31's. Trust me. I am pulling 20-21mpg with this setup in my mj

Yeah, I know. I threw on some 31's and lost some power. Good thing you can rev the **** out of these things. The trans swap is a summer project I'm planning and I hope to regear at the same time (+SYE, new u-joints, etc). My drivetrain just might make it through the winter... Is there an ID stamped on these transmissions if I get lucky and find one at a junkyard?

the ID's are hardly ever visible.

go by my specs and you'll find one. 4 cylinder with a 5th gear location is the specs....there are a few different variations (such as the tail housing...reguarding output seal depth, and then the 91+ got bigger bearings, and there's a couple different styles of external and internal slaves depending on if it's pre or post 91) but nothing too major and you can make any combination work...
