Alright so I bought a 1996 XJ with the 4.0 5 speed. The truck has a problem where when you drive in two the truck wants to kick out and engage 4wd as your driving. Any ideas what might cause this? The T case is half out by the previous owner but I want an idea before I tear it apart and buy a new t case

 

Bad mounts causing shifting of engine/transfercase making lever shift or miss adjusted linkage

 

Please forgive my stupidity but which mounts would you be speaking of? T case, motor and trans? All 3 or 1 or the other? Appreciate the reply.

 

If ones bad replace them all like 50 bucks for all of them at oreillys and a lifetime warranty

 

Sounds like a shift linkage issue to me. It pretty easy to adjust. To check it put the lever in 2 hi, get underneath and use a pry bar and see if you can manually shift the lever on the transfer case forward at all. If it moves your linkage needs adjusting.
