transfer case and transmission noises

I have a 94 xj sport and it has some issues. When I put her into 4wd there is a terrible clunking sound that makes the whole car jerk. has anyone had this and what is it? plus when the car is in 4th gear it sounds like a kind of grinding sound. When I come to a stop fro the rear of the Jeep somes a clunk clunk clunk? I thing that is u joints not sure I need help on all these

I would start to trouble shoot this by removing the front drive shaft. Then put in 4wheel n see if the problem continues. If it doesn't probably an issue with either front drive shaft or front axel. If problem continues do the opposite. Remove the rear shaft put it in 4 wheel drive n see what happens. If you don't have a SYE put a rubber glove around the rear output shaft to keep the oil from leaking out like crazy while u take it around the block. That's what I would start with to narrow it down.

ok I will give that a try thanks! I know the clunking is coming from the transfer case. Thats garenteed it needs to be rebuilt. But what was the problem?

I can clearly hear the noise when I hand turn the front passenger side wheel on jack stands, and the noise usually happens wile im turning in 4wd, what could it be?
