First check your linkage, not sure on the case but is it part-time or full-time?
Did you hear anything before it lost power? usually you will hear a snap or some other sound if it were to go.

Did you try 4Hi and 4Lo? I'm thinking if the chain broke, you would hear it slapping around?
I just took my case apart this week and that chain is beafy enough it would make a lot of noise. I wouldn't drive with it broken cause its pretty tight in there and looks like a lot of things it could get tangled up in.

Sure you still have your front drive shaft in?

If you still have 4 wheel drive, what may have happened is you lost enough vacuum to allow the cad to disengage which would make a bang as it came out under load.As the collar slides off under load it may have twisted the splines or the diaphragm may have shot craps
