Transfer case pops out of gear in all modes except 4x4 low
Hi,
I have a 1996 cherokee 4.0 automatic all stock for now.
I just replaced the transfer case with a 242, it originally had a 231 but It blew up on the smog dyno days after i bought it.
Yes, i adjusted the shift linkage properly.
The funny thing is, it pops out of gear and makes a grinding noise like it's in neutral. It will happen, and I'll try moving the tc selector up and down through the 4x4 and 2wd modes and it will continue to grind the same. It happens in 2wd high, 4wd high and all time 4wd, but not in 4wd low. It will happen at any speed, even when I'm on the highway, I have not taken her off-road yet.
I play with it for a while and it might work great for a little while, then if i go reverse or coast it starts grinding and rolls along like its in neutral; engine free revs, and when i put it in park, it rolls around till i put it into 4wd low.
Is there a common problem with the 96 units? Can I get a 95 or older unit instead?
I had a 89 with a np 242 with 250,000 miles with no problems, just had bad luck with this 1996 xj
I have a lame year for transfer cases, it seems like 97 and up won't work.
can i install a 91-95 with the slip yoke and drive shaft?
I really need your help!
thanks guys.

I wish I was in your situation, but I'm not so lucky. I need some real help. I'm planning on going to the junkyard tomorrow, unless someone can clue me in on the repair. I do have a partial 231 from a 95 xj and a complete and blown origonal, 232 from my jeep. can I use parts from these to fix my tc?
