Default Transfer case output Shaft oil Seal; Wrong part from ebay, but...

Hi all. I've got a 99' xj sport with the np231 transfer case. I ordered on ebay the OEM 4798117 - Transfer Case Output Shaft Oil Seal but I got the OEM 4638904. Some websites say that it's the same, so I ask you: will it fit on my Xj??? Tnx

4798117 is for the 242J. 4638904 is for the 231J.

After further checking, the rear output shaft seal for a 1999 NP231J TC (52099212) on a 4.0/AW4, is part number 4798117.

The '99 parts catalog is dicked up. The '98 catalog and '00 catalog makes it clear that the 4798117 seal is what you need.

I should have checked your "Car" data.

I'll look it up after I drink these 1/2 dozen beers.

So finally I can add pics; this is my leaking seal and the TC:

Ant this is the seal that I got from ebay...

SO, I think it's NOT the right one, I'm picking up the new one from the dealer today I hope.
The right one should be the "National oil seal part # 4370N", thanks rand4x4, and all the others for the answers!

The one you have looks like the right seal. What about it makes you suspect it is the wrong part?

A tip, if you pull the cone-shaped part out you can much more easily get the seal out and put the new one in. It is like 4 bolts and it will come right off and you can then pound out the old one from the inside rather than prying it out by the little plastic lip of the seal. Just clean up the mating surfaces and use RTV to put the cone back on.

Hi, makes me think that is wrong the fact that mine doesn't have that "tongue" over the shaft (don't know how to call the shape of the seal), it's completely flat. Maybe this one I have fits the same, but I cannot "try", cause if it doesn't fit I don't have anything else to drive while waiting for the right one

Its issues like that are what makes me buy things like it locally, where I can exchange them easley if they do not fit.

You're so damn right!
Dealer told me that what I got from ebay is the "seal for the slip yoke eliminator housing". Will fit or not on my xj, not anymore a problem, I'm waiting for the right one.

Anyway I'm pretty much sure that it fits the same, cause the size of housing and shaft are the same (or not?) but I cannot experiment and risk not to drive for few days

Just want to add 2 more pics; I got the part from Jeep dealer and here are the differences...

They have the SAME number code: 4638904. The correct one is the left one, Mopar brand.
Tomorrow I'll finally put it on. Thanks again to all of you
