Just checked the Mobil1 website for synthetic ATF for the transfer case on my 1996 XJ. All they recommended is regular, no synthetic.
anybody know anything different?

Got curious.
I guess this is the one they are telling you?

https://www.mobil.com/en/lubricants/.../mobil-atf-dm/

Poking around I found this:

https://www.mobil.com/en/lubricants/...synthetic-atf/

Looks like it should be right but who can tell for sure.

This is why I use the regular stuff from Napa:

https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/NOC7...ordInput=75200

Says right on the label what I need it to say.
The funny thing is it says it is not right for my XJ or yours.
But according to everything I read on the internet we want the DexronIII/Mercon so.....

If I were to get daring I might try this:

https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/VTNV...28&adtype=pla&

Down in the specs it says Dexron III / Mercon but read the label on the container.
Kinda of a multi purpose thing. Which makes me nervous so....

According to the 1995 FSM Mercon/Dextron III is right and Mobil1 synthetic says it is that standard.
It's as if they don't want to sell this stuff.

Just use cheap Mercon rated ATF, its a waste of money to put synthetic in the transfer case.

And the only reason they spec'd Dexron isto match what was used in the AW4. The xfer case isn't picky at all.

Correct, it makes things easier. The transfer case will work fine with pretty much any atf or even light gear oil.

Well, in these parts the only store that has a Mobil ATF on the shelf is Advance Auto, and it is Mobil1 ATF that Mobil doesn't recommend and neither does Advance for the XJ.

Guess I am going to use Valvoline or something.

If a YouTube Jeep channel hasn't used that yet, the time is ripe.

No auto parts store or Walmart around you has Mercon rated atf? You can find it anywhere here. Most people working at auto parts stores know very little, research what you need first then go in and get it.

As a proud member of the United Church of Bacon (https://unitedchurchofbacon.org/), I feel some obligation to try this with my 231 before I pull it out. With the leak at the driveshaft seal hitting the exhaust, I would smell the part. Image all the fun bacon lovers that would follow me home! Can I declare the cost of a rebuild as a tax deductible contribution to my church?

Walmart had some store brand Mercon, but that is not what I was mentioning.

I got Valvoline at Advance. They are still having some wrinkles with the Speedperks thing, but they got it to work.

The Walmart brand atf works fine. That's all I use in my transmission and transfer case.
