Transfer case end cap
Hi all,
I am driving an XJ 1996 4.0 L6 auto...
recently discover oil stains at the transfer case area...
I would like to know if the metal end cap at the transfer case....
should it sit tight on the transfer case...
must we apply liquid gasket to it?
I do not know the right term for the end cap...dust cap?
Thank you for all enlightenment.

That is a dust cap and it should be very close to the transfer case when seated properly. If you look at your first picture, you can see where it was. Your seal behind it is what is leaking and will need to be replaced. The dust cap is pressed on so a new one will be needed... or you can do what I did and crimp it a little then press it back on.
