As expected, on long hills my trans shifts out of overdrive into 3rd. But then goes back into OD real quick. Then it bounces between OD and 3rd. Is this normal? Would be nice if the trans could sense your still on a hill and to stay in 3rd.

Check the fluid level lately?

 

My AW-4 auto tranny does the same thing. Adjustment of your TV cable might help a little bit but, I just manually shift it back to 3rd when I want it to stay out of OD for pulling a hill.

 

Trans fluid level is fine. Just think there is no trans logic involved.

 

 

Mine has tendency to do same. Seems like it could be a IAC or TPS issue.. Someone suggested the throttle cable adjustment already. There is a good thread on how to already on here somewhere. I know what ya mean about it not being an issue w/ the tranny. It's not that the tranny is bad, it's just getting a signal to shift a lot. It seems like the torque converter is a possibility: when mine engages it drops about 500 rpm. So going up a hill in 3rd w/ torque converter disengaged it will engage converter, shift into 4th at which point I gotta put the pedal down more. This is when it repeats the process. Idk trannys well, but im pretty sure this is an accurate description of what mine does...

 

Isn't it the kickdown cable?

 

Seems like that is a common one. Kinda easy to stretch or whatever else with time and use... There is another post going that talks about the tps's involvement with this function too..

 

Sounds like a common issue with no real solution.

...Idk about that... Look up the thread about kick down cable adj.

 

-Open hood while vehicle is off in park.
-Find TB
-Press and hold cable release button.
-While holding cable release button push conduit into ratcheting cable release button.
-Hold conduit in.
-Release the cable release button.
-Open TB to wide open and the button will automatically ratchet and lock into the correct place.

I use "3" instead of D when on winding, hilly roads with relatively low speeds. I find the constant shifting annoying.

 

adjusting the kick down cable might help but every jeep with the aw-4 does this, remember just because it is electronically controlled doesn't make it the smartest trans ever in fact on a hill it is down right stupid

 

real simple solution gear lever from "D" to "3" solves downshifting.
