I just bought a 97 cherokee sport 4x4 4.0L auto the previous owner swaped the engine trans and t-case out for the same set up but out of a 98. since the swap the trans does shift right he says but for a very low price I bought since I work on cars. I just bought it last night at 10 pm I went out today at 530am to take a look around I found that the trans wire harness is differant than the stock so he rigged up his own to improvise.

my questions are

can a 98 trans work in a 97?
when I do a parts look up if I put 98 in it looks for 98+ trans
when I put 97in it only looks for 97 trans

Is there correct harness you can use to put between the trucks harness and the 98s trans harness?

it shifts funny and you have to manualy shift it I know its a low mile engine because I seen the truck it came out of it does have some codes I will have to go back out and get them for some reason my scan tool didnt store them.

I am thinking you may need to go find ya a 97 out of a Junk Yard and swap it back in.

I am pretty sure that the computer is different on the 97 versus the 98 but I am guessing.

 

thats what I am thinking I found one for 175 and they will give me a 60 waranty just wanted to make sure before I went throught the trouble

 

The problem is the reluctor ring in the rear of the tranny. The 97 uses a 2 tooth reluctor the 98 uses a 4 finger reluctor. The 98 also has an input speed sensor at the front of the tranny and an output speed sensor. Do not connect the wiress for the front sensor, tour 97 TCU does not support it. You'll need to swap the reluctor from the 97 into the 98 by removing the tailcone adapter and it easy after that.

In the following pic you can see the 4 finger reluctor ring on the tranny output shaft and the 97 2 finger version (silver in color) on the bench next to the snap-ring pliers.


The harness from the 97 can be used if you swap the sensor connectors from the 98 onto the 97 harness. Leave the 2 connectors near the firewall alone.

Are these codes the problem too or are these on becasue I have a 98 trans in a 97 jeep

 

Those are standard error codes that are typically cased by a dirty NSS, or in your case, an incorrect signal from the output speed sensor to the TCU. Once you put the correct reluctor in and get the wiring corrected those codes will go away.

ok I finaly got time to do this job
I pulled the transfer case and the tail cone off and took the 4 ring thing out and put the one on for the 97

what about the sensor for this part the one for the 98 is shorter am I suposed to change that too and what about the wires?

 

No need to change the sensor itself. I recommend swapping the 97 harness onto the 98 tranny. You'll have to splice 4 wires.

 

I have changed the wiring and I ended up putting the 97 sensor in I still have to put the crossmember back on and drive it that sensor with the yellow/black and red/ black wires doesnt need to be hooked up? and do you think I will be fine because I used the old longer sensor

 

The 97 TCU has no provisions for an input speed sensor so you should be okay. I didn't switch the sensors when I did my 98 AW4 into my 97 heep.

 

Well I got time yesterday to finish the jeep up and it runs great thanks for all you help
