I was told a while back never to use any transmission fluid other than the Dexron III Mercon suggested in the owner's manual, even after the IV, V, and VI versions came out, superseding the III version.




But this is what I'm seeing at the car part store now. Nothing lower than Dexron VI...




The one on the right says it's suitable for all Dexron III Mercon applications, but I'm assuming it may not hold up as long because it's regular fluid vs. the synthetic Dexron 6 on the left. Which one of these should I use in the old '96 XJ?

I have run the regular fluid for half a million miles between both jeeps....all took the fluid on the right and I changed the fluid every 100,000 miles whether it needed it or not.

You must not be looking very well because I have never been to a parts store or Walmart where they didn't have regular cheap Mercon rated ATF, the one on the right is fine.
