K look I have had the worst problems with this jeep and I'm at the edge of just selling it. 96xj with 129k auto. When driving on freeway just now at 65 it would be at 2k rpm. The. Just jump to 2500 rpm like it jumped out of overdrive. Though when u hit the gas and stay planted it would kick it self into overdrive. Though as soon as u let up on the gas a little it goes out of overdrive. Please help.

 

Search for the Trans kickdown cable adjustment, you'll find the factory service procedure here. Certainly sounds like your problem..

 

Just fixed this on my 96, overdrive solenoid was bad. 300 bucks for a trans shop to fix it but you may be able to do it your self. The part is 100 bucks plus fluid, filter and what not.
