As you can see from this pic Jeeps were originally made to take Dex 2... They don't make it anymore so Dex 3 is fine. Ofcourse this is a 87. Tranny is AW4

Blue and Stryker put it pretty well...

But let me ask you a couple of questions...

The AW-4 is not a Chrysler tranny. Heck, Chrysler didn't even spec it into the Cherokee.

Do we see Aisin-Warner issuing a TSB about using ATF +4 in their tranny?
Do we see Toyota issuing one? (Toyota used the AW-4)

Remember that a TSB's intended purpose was for a manufacturer to notify its liscensed service outlets about a known maintence issue or update them on a service program for known faults. They orignally are not intended for common consumption. They wouldn't even be public without several pieces of legislation requiring manufacturers to make them so.

Absolutely.....

The main difference in tranny fluids is the friction modifiers and some other elements of the additive package. Inside a transmission enviroment, these can have serious consequences. The T-case enviroment is quite different. The differences in the fluids would have a much smaller effect.

Or an adjustable will work just fine..Not need to buy a special socket or wrench if you have an adjustable pair...

Depends who put in on last. I tried the adjustable on mine when i first did it. I had to go buy a socket to get that sucker off lol.

I suggest the socket so you don't gall it up so badly you can't get it out. With 3/4" sockets I have ones that go to 2 1/2" in size and have come in handy more than once. I don't have and real large metrics though and so far have not needed those so maybe purchasing that single socket might be the cheapest route.

Question Fluid Capacities

I need to change my aunt's 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport's transmission fluid and transfer case fluid, but I do not have access to the manual. Does anyone know the fluid capacities for the Aisin-Warner AW-4 4-speed automatic transmission and New Process NP242 "Selec-Trac" transfer case?

ATF+4(R) - (Type 9602) is being used as factory fill for Chrysler Group automatic transmissions. ATF+4(R) is recommended for all vehicles equipped with Chrysler Group automatic transmissions EXCEPT FOR THOSE LISTED IN THE NOTE ABOVE.

So I need to add about 2 quarts to my 1997 AW4. Last time I did any trans work on an AW4 Dex III was readily available. I went to the parts store the other day and no more Dex III.

So what should I use? They do have a bunch of stuff labeled "Dex/Merc" with no numbers (ie: Dex II, III, IV, etc). Is this acceptable or do I need to try and find Dex III?

Admittedly I am not up on automatics like I probably should be.

Dex/Merc should be fine...read the back and see what it is compatible with. Your parts place is WRONG if they say Dex III/Merc is not available.

The AW4 manual lists Mopar Mercon or Mopar Dexron II, but that manaul must date back to 1987-1988.

The 1996 owners manual lists DexIII/Mercon

Are you leaking that you need to add 2 quarts? If its been some time since you've changed the fluid I would suggest draining the pan and refilling. This will only take you down 4-5 quarts of the total, but you can do it again sometime. The more frequently you drain and refill, the more the old fluid is diluted. Per the 1996 owners manual, capacity is 8 quarts from dry, so at least half of the fluid resides in the pan with the engine off.

No one told me it wasn't available - I am just saying what is and isn't on the shelf in the 2 stores right by my house. Neither has any Dex III,

I've also read the back of the labels and none besides the Castrol say anything about Dex III oddly enough.

I was steering away from the Castrol because it is at least partially synthetic (don't remember if it was full or not) and I am pretty sure the P.O. didn't ever use anything but the cheapest fluid he could find in it.

At 166K I'm not inclined to drain it and refill it.
