i have an 89 cherokee laredo 4.0 auto 4x4. i was just wondering if someone could tell me which tranny, transfer case, and axles i have or how to find out if there are different options

From your clue about having part time@full time 4x4, I can say you have the NP242 transfer case. Need more clues or pictures on the axles. If you have the auto, its the Aisin AW4. If you have the 5 speed it could be either the Peugot Ba10/5 or the more durable Aisin AX15. I still like the peugot, though everyone hates it. Feels more truck like to me than the Aisin AX15. But I also love the 1984 year XJs, with their Awesome carburated 2.5 liter 4 banger and Briggs@Stratton like GM2.8 V6. Oh Yeah!

between 87-89 there were cherokee's that came equiped with the dana 44 from the factory that had the tow package. it was pretty rare, but they are out there
