Tranny ?
took my dad out fro a ride last night. going down the road at about 55 i'm turning about 2200 rpms. the tranny will shift into OD if you give it more gas but then it shifts back down. well we turned around and started back to the house and it shifted into OD fine but was only rinning about 40 mph stayed there for about 5 secs then shted back down. my ? is what makes it do this? would changing the fluid and filterfix this problem or is it somthing else.

I know this is going to sound kinda off the wall but your tranny is prolly not shifting weird. It is locking and unlocking the torque converter. The control for that on Renix Jeeps is the TPS. It needs to be calibrated and/or replaced and the new one calibrated. They are like a reostat and get flat spots on them over the years. Once the TPS is recalibrated and/or replaced you will notice that the tranny shifts just fine and the added benefit may be better throttle response. Unfortunately there is no improvement in MPG.

well it shifts the rpms will drop down then you can feel it shift back down and the tach goes back up. in OD at 55 should it be running about 15 to 18 hundred? right now its about 2200. you can't even feel it shifting through the other gears. but if it was the converter locking and unlocking would it play with the rpms like that? what is the best way to cal. the tps?

Yes I thought mine was a problem with the valve body in the tranny or a bad solinoid. I took it to the Aamco Tranny shop and he is the one who told me that the converter was locking and unlocking. I had been trying to school myself on Renix Jeeps and remembered reading that the torque converter was controlled by the TCU and that in turn was controlled by the TPS so I started looking around and found the way to adjust the TPS and adjusted mine and it got much better. As soon as I scraped up the money I bought a new TPS and that was about 3 years ago and have not had a problem since.
The following is a link to the TPS adjustment which can be done with a $4 multimeter from HF.

Mike on DC volts it should read near 5 volts or 4.75+ volts. Then follow the instructions in the link I gave you.

The problem is your high number is still too low and your seperation is not wide enough. Try adjusting so that your high is closer to 5 volts and your lower number should be 80% of the higher number. When I changed mine the new TPS had a high number of 4.96 volts and my low was 4.07 volts so try to manipulate yours to increase the high number and to get a difference of close to 80% of that high number.
