Alright guys I have read through the thread and have answered one of my questions. But I am still a little confused.
We just bought my wife a 06 Grand Cherokee Laredo and am looking to install a hitch to tow a couple of jet skies. Not heavy at all but when I crawled under there to look it look like its a uni-body frame. I have looked at JC Whitney and they sell a hitch but it doesn't bold to the frame or anything. Can any of you guys recommend a hitch or a good web site to buy one from.
I haven't looked yet to see if there is a store on this forum. I am a member on a diesel forum and they have people that sell parts so I am sure somebody sells parts here.
This thread is a great read. Someone should make an awesome hitch/hauling stuff post and get it stickied. i'm eventually going to get a hitch but still am unsure of a few things. Can we get a stock trans cooler out of another xj, anyone have a writeup, and/or a link to an awesome hitch? Links?
I just had a etrailer hitch delivered for my 93 XJ (148,000 mi). The site and the videos make it look pretty much problem free. As soon as I got it out of the box I wanted to check for fitment. I had them verify over the phone that it was the right hitch for my Jeep.
The flipping skid plate bulges out at the sides making it impossible to slide the sides of the hitch up into position.
So I figure I'd have to take the skid plate off and put it back on over the hitch.
I can't find another example of someone having this issue.
Any thoughts?
I'm in the process of installing an OEM tank skid plate on my '96. I knew I'd have to remove my tow hitch so while I had it off and skid plate not mounted yet I tried a fit. Basically ran into just what you have as far as the hitch fitting on to the skid plate. With the skid plate laying upside down I couldn't fit the hitch over it. But it would slide onto it. The front most bolt on the hitch is the one that the skid plate bolts to. It looked to me that if I elongate the hole in the skid plate it will make the two line up easier. I'm out of commission right now so can't complete the install. I have a pipe bumper so I won't have to remove it. Your plan to remove yours sounds like the way to go. Hope this helps some. Here is what my hitch looks like in case yours is different.
Thanks Ez I'm going to take the bumper off in the morning and see if that'll do it. Also, to add to my dilemma, as I attempted to start removing the skid plate I couldn't find a socket that fit perfectly. And of course, the one I think will is missing. I have two socket sets and the 18 millimeter is gone for both. The 3/4" seems to have too much play and the next size down is too small.
