No but I sense a little hostility, been repoed before? Yes some repo men do care about damage, you don't get work if you kill what your repoing.

chill dude. i drive a flatbed and all 4x4s have to be on a flatbed or dollies. you should know that.
it's either 4 up or 4 down with the following:
(it's been said already), transmission in park and t-case in neutral. that's because if the tranny is in neutral or any other gear, the gears are turning and the pump isn't pumping. at the very least, you will wear out your torque converter seal therefor resulting in loss of tranny fluid, then you will have catastrophic failure.
but before you realize it, your tranny will explode shooting shrapnel in every direction.
go ahead, try it out for yourself.

No hostility, but I don't why you don't accept the facts other than I'm guessing you're a little thick headed. As I said earlier, there's a big difference when towing a vehicle 1,200 miles behind a motorhome (which is what this thread was about before you hijacked it) and towing to the local impound lot. I've never had a car repo'd.

I Tow............................................... ...........
Flat towing .....Tansfer case in "N" trans in "P".
Other than that AWD & 4X4 go up on the sofa!
Anything else will cost you money and lost customers.
BTW...let's keep the comments nice and leave our tempers at the door. You can state you opinions and facts without having to be loud.

A jeep with a242 or 231 TC can be towed 4 down or with front up if the TC is in neutral because the oil pump runs off the tail shaft
the trans must in park for an auto trans it wont oil right if it turns from the back
all other configurations 2wd or 4wd you should check
even some stick 2wd trans wont oil right if towed and will be damaged
and remember even the owners manual can be wrong cus they are for general info on more than one model
if you have a full time TC that only have 4h and 4L don't tow front whees up it will kill the viscus coupling

Talked to Jeep dealer, tranny oil pump turns in N also, the only real damage towing, except for long distances, would be to t case if that's not in N. Everyone is right, case closed.

how about your lights when towing behind an RV? Do i just run wires to the rear cherokee lights and tap into the OE harness for stop, tail, and turn?

my XJ spent most of its 72k miles behind a motor home and it has a blue ox plate and tow bar transfer case in neutral and trans in park(if an auto) or if you have a manual (like my YJ) put in any gear but I use 5th in case it hits a bump and the tcase gets knocked into gear..works great,,,as far as the lights go I ran a dedicated flat 4 wire from the front to the rear lights and put an extra bulb in the tailight housings and just plug and go...i did this also to my YJ and never a problem...best way to go in my opinion

ok, i got the tow bar all done.
i ran dedicated 4 wire to the back & added another bulb & socket into the light housing.
i know to keep the tranny in park & the T case in neutral.
the only thing i don't fully grasp is the key switch position.
if i put the key in the on position that will unlock the steering, but won't it drain the battery on long hauls?

just turn the key one click towards the on position (no lights on on the dash) and turn the steering wheel back and forth to insure it is unlocked and you are good to go

Getting ready to flat tow my 2001 Cherokee behind my 2004 Dodge Ram 2500. This thread has been a lot of help.. Glad you all duked it out for the rest of us. Plus.. Owners manuals are a big help
My question is.. It shouldn't matter if your towing behind a Motorhome.. or a Truck.. Its all the same correct? As long as you have the capacity on the towing vehicle and obviously a receiver hitch to connect your tow bar to your good? Right? Just never seen a vehicle flat towed behind anything besides motorhomes..
Another question.. Besides the tow bar? What do I need to install the tow bar to the Jeep.. Is there a mounting bracket or brace? Or does it mount straight to the frame?

first...if you are flat towing then the hitch isnt AS important for weight "carrying" as it will be pulling. the "tongue weight" of your tow bar is like 5 lbs vs 350+ on a "trailer"..you are draggin your weight vs carrying it...any 2 inch receiver will be rated at 3k lbs minimum so you are good to go...i used to flat tow behind a Cutlass many many moons ago and it had a 1 1/2 inch receive and never a problem. A 1980 Diesel Chevette with AC could flat tow your Heep as all it has to do is to get rolling and all is good...until you have to stop
As far as the tow bar goes you have many flavors and I have towed with two kinds and really like my Blue ox set up...it is pricey but it is a ONE person hook up with no runaway Jeep or in and out of the jeep to get it perfectly aligned...i used the old "A" frame deals for years ...worked fine but it is a little bit of a pain if you are by your self trying to hook it up...Level ground is fine but not always avail so I went with the Blue ox---Roadmaster has some nice stuff also... feel free to pm me if you have any questions
