GVWR (Gross VEHICLE Weight Rating) is the maximum weight of the vehicle by itself, no trailers are computed in this weight but tongue weight is. You need to be concerned with, as far as towing goes, GCWR (Gross COMBINED Weight Rating), and the gross weight rating of the trailer. GVWR is of course important as well whatever you have in the Jeep, plus tongue weight will be used in that calculation.

When you really get down to it, the XJ has 2 certified tow ratings. One if you don't have all the towpackage goodies and a weight distributing hitch is 2000 lbs. This is a pretty safe tow weight for the XJ. 5000 is doable but you have to have all those items including trailer brakes and a weight distributing hitch. The weight distributing hitch is very important on a lightweight little vehicle like the XJ.
