Default Tire-to-wheel width matching question

I have seen people have issues with their cars if the put too wide of a tire on a narrow rim. I think the issue is because the sidewalls bend in to meet the rim and makes for a squishy ride. If I'm not mistaking my stock rims are 7" wide and I currently have P215/75/R15 tires on them. So basically I have a 8.5" wide tire on a 7" wide rim. How wide could I go without causing handling issues? What are the basic tire rules?

Thanks in advance for your fountain of knowledge

I have 235's on my stock rims but I think you can go as wide as 10.5 without problems. I wouldnt try much more than that though.

I am not a tire/wheel expert though. Just trying to remember what I have read here in the past.

Although, my drivers side tire rubs on the LCA for some reason, I am guessing its because none of my tires are the same brand and there are slight differences in the tire or something.

One day Ill have matching tires.

generally for a stock 5 inch rim, you should only go as wide as 185, maybe 225, but that's pushing it.
for a 7 inch rim, 205 - 225 is about right.
for an 8 inch rim, 10.5 to 12.5 fits good.
then for 10 inch rim from 12.5 to 13.5.
then get a 12 inch rim for 14 to 15 inch wide tires.
they do make a 14 inch wide rim, but that's more for full size trucks with 44's.

but for the stubborn folks, they'll say you could use 33x12.5 on stocks, just because they can.

but that's what i've learned over the years.

As caged said, and I'm one of "those guys"!! I have 7" Rock Crawlers, and run 33"x12.5"x15" tires. I have done so for years, and will continue. The ride is fine, but then again, it's a Jeep, not a Continental!! LOL!! My tires wear fine, as they are 7 years old now. I will have to replace them due to chunking rather than wear. I put about 5K miles on my rig per year, cause it's not my DD. HTH!!

what height are your tires? 75? Are you at stock height? I'm at stock height right now and would like to go with a bigger, wider tire like a 29x10.5 or a 30x10.5 but I don't want them rubbing themselves to pieces.

Yeah I am at stock height. All the tires are 235/75/15's Just the tire brands are mismatched. The front drivers side rub only slightly on the LCA but only when I turn the wheel all the way.

On all stock wheels too? Do all Jeep Chrokee wheels have the same offset? Do they all have the same width? I'm sorry for all the dumb newbie questions but I need to learn the basics of what I'm driving.

Thanks for all the great answers.
